Yoga Sutra 2.37 Asteya

In this week's sermon we're focusing on the yama of asteya, or non-stealing. It might seem really easy to say: "I don't steal. Check!" But just like everything, stealing is a much more complicated issue than that. Stealing is related to greed. And not just on the material level. Stealing can happen energetically, spiritually, and on and on. The yama of asteya is about equal exchange. It's about cultivating an internal sense of abundance. Yoga Sutra 2.37 Asteya (& Abundance) HOW TO APPROACH THE YAMA-S This practice is based ... (Continue Reading)

Yoga Sutra 2.36 Satya

We continue our exploration of the five yama-s (the ethical underpinning of yoga) with satya, or truthfulness. This sermon leads us back into our study of the klesha-s (the things that keep us stuck. You know, attachment, fear, things like that...) and asks important questions about our identity. In order to establish ourselves in truthfulness, we have to see ourselves and our world with clear vision. This is an important sermon that touches on the heart of yoga. Yoga Sutra 2.36 Satya (& Identity) HOW TO APPROACH THE YAMA-S ... (Continue Reading)

Yoga Sutra 2.35 Ahimsā

This week begins our exploration of the yama-s (the ethical underpinning of yoga). We begin with ahimsā, which is most often translated as non-violence, but is so much more than the suppression of violence. Ahimsā is an inner attitude of reverence for all beings that simply doesn’t allow space for violence to arise. This sermon explores possibility and limitation. It explores violence and love. It includes the wisdom of Pandit Rajmani, Ravi Ravindra, and bell hooks. It dives deep into the klesha-s (the afflictions that cause us trouble everyday). And it ends with a ... (Continue Reading)

YAMA: The Ethical Underpinning of Yoga

Yoga is a state of being AND the practices that help us reach that state of being. The practices of yoga are laid out in an 8-limbed path that includes everything you would suspect: movement, breath, meditation. But it begins with ethics. It begins with relationship. This week's sermon is actually the beginning of a new sermon series. For the next several weeks we'll explore the Yama-s, which are the ethical underpinning of yoga practice. This first sermon is an introduction. It helps us explore the question: How can we increase our capacity for discomfort so that we can ... (Continue Reading)

Thoughts on Spiritual Bypassing vs. Spiritual Resourcing

Welcome to the Yoga Church Sunday Sermons Late Spring 2020 Let's begin with our simple mantra. Let's presence ourselves: Here we are. Here we are in this moment. This complex and potent moment. We've been facing a global pandemic for months. And now, in the US, white people are grappling with the reality of white supremacy in a way that feels different than anything I've experienced in my lifetime. Here we are. I invite you to notice your breath. Feel your feet on the floor. And direct your attention inward. How's your body responding to all that's happening? ... (Continue Reading)

We have to imagine the world as if it could be otherwise.

Welcome to the Yoga Church Sunday Sermons Late Spring 2020 First of all, let me say thank you! Last Sunday I took a break to cultivate the pause. And I really paused. I stayed off the internet. I ignored clock time. I read and hiked and ate carrot cake! And I felt deeply supported by you (thanks for reaching out to me with such kindness) and the Universe (a few magical things happened!) and my husband (of more than 20 years now...). On our hike Jeremy and I talked about action and equity and racism and feeling helpless ... (Continue Reading)

The Next, Right Action

Welcome to the Yoga Church Sunday Sermons Late Spring 2020 Do you ever look at everything happening in the world and feel overwhelmed? Me too. But we can't get lost or frozen in the feelings of overwhelm. No matter how small we feel, our actions matter. Our actions create the world. Think about that: Our actions create the world. (This is a big deal!) I've got a new sermon for you this week that explores the root of our actions and the ways our practice can support our efforts to act with intention and move toward love. ... Spiritual Practices for Beltane

Welcome to the Yoga Church Sunday Sermons Spiritual Practices for Beltane The moment we're born, we inhale. And with this powerful first in-breath, we're called to exhale. And the rhythm of life begins! The rhythm of breath. The rhythm of our beating hearts. The rhythm of waking and sleeping. Of sun and moon, day and night. The rhythm of winter giving way to summer and summer giving way to winter. Up in the northern hemisphere where I live, we've just arrived at the mid-point of spring--which is a wildly potent time. Celtic teacher Glennie Kindred describes it like ... (Continue Reading)

Let’s Not Go Back To Normal – Coronavirus and Action

Welcome to the Yoga Church Sunday Sermons Early Spring 2020 Did you know that I love superhero movies? Superman, Captain America, Thor... I love these characters. In fact, I keep their action figures on my writing desk :-) Superhero stories help us imagine a force that's big enough and powerful enough to fix the immense problems of our world. Unfortunately, Thor probably isn't going to show up in a storm of lightning and stop the spread of coronavirus. Which means we have to figure it out on our own. But here's the thing: When we try to solve ... (Continue Reading)

The Space Between – Coronavirus and Emotion

Welcome to the Yoga Church Sunday Sermons Early Spring 2020 This was a tough week for me. I found myself randomly bursting into tears while listening to a doctor on a podcast or walking with my dog in the woods... Emotions—all different kinds—are coming fast. I'm doing my best to let them come. And I'm doing my best to let them go. It's a dance. And it's ongoing. This week's sermon explores the importance of feeling our feelings. I know that resistance can be strong in moments like this, but it's crucial that we stay present to what's ... (Continue Reading)
